At the time my mom and I lived with my grandma.
They noticed every time I answered the phone I would
Hold it to my right ear. Even if they put it in my left hand.
No biggie right? My mom finally had me try and talk to
someone with the phone with my left ear. I actually remember
saying, "No one is there mom." Thats when we went into the
doctor for hearing tests. Turns out, my coclia never developed.
Most (including my right ear) look like a snail shell. My left
coclia is totally straight.
I get this ALL the time.
Doesn't it suck only being able to hear out of one ear?
Um. Well. First of all, I was born that way. So I don't know
any different. Second, I don't hear ANYTHING when I sleep.
So awesome.
When I was twelve I fainted. I will admit it was my fault.
Not eating like I should have been low blood sugar got the best
of me. The doctor said we should have an EKG done just to be sure
nothing serious is going on. We did, and the nurse came back looking
super confused. She said shed was so sorry but they had hooked the
machine up backwards. They swore they had never done that before
and must have apologized a million times. They decided to do it again.
Getting the same results, they recommend that I go see a cardiologist.
My parents were freaking out. I was twelve and didn't really understand
what the big deal was. I felt fine...
Of course it took what seemed like forever to get in. When we finally did,
they informed me that I have situs inversus. A one in a million case where
all my organs (heart included) are on the opposite side of my body.
My right lung is in the left lungs spot. Crazy right? Some people with this
condition have serious problems. Lucky for me everything is working exactly how
it should, just not in the placed where we thought. Most people have defective cilia. They are not able to move and function as they should. Meaning, I get tons of sinus infections, and lung infections. Also causing us to find out my right sinus is undeveloped... Double bummer.
I remember being at primary children's and the doctors asking me if they could bring
in their medical students. I was so weirded out! They all thought it was the most
amazing, cool thing ever. At the time it seemed like a pain in the ass.
I am SO grateful for all the technology we have today. That they were able to find out what was going on and to know that this will have no huge effect on my life, is wonderful. I do feel kinda cool bragging. I knew I was special:)
I don't think I knew you were deaf in one ear. Or maybe you told me and I just forgot.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I hear about your "insides" I still can't believe it.
I'm glad you can live a normal life and that you are healthy because I don't know what little Chuck Wheat (Mattie) would do without you!
You are indeed a rare bird - "1 in a million" as the doctor put it.
ReplyDeleteRemember when the cardiologist told you if you ever needed to break up with a boyfriend you had the perfect out "my heart isn't in the right place", he thought he was so funny!!
You should send your story to Grey's Anatomy...you could be rich and famous!
ReplyDeleteOne in a million!!! Go buy a lottery ticket!!!
ReplyDeleteRIGHT? I totally should. However,I think I used up all my luck with medical things. Because i'm never lucky, and always clumsy.
